Outlook Express 6 popup when I first load XP prompts me to "Compact Messages".  I am not using OE6.
In the last week or so when I first load XP I get the most annoying popup that states "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes" My options are "OK" or "Cancel".I am pretty sure that I know what compacting messages is about, but I am not running Outlook Express, I am running Outlook 2000. I can't seem to locate where to turn off this "friendly reminder" in either OE6 or Outlook 2000.So why is this popup box just now appearing and how can I stop it from popping up. It really is starting to get on my nerves.I have done some searching on how to make it STOP, but obviously haven't found the answer. In fact this annoyance has made me create a Windows Live account just so I could post a question here. grumble, grumble,...Thanks, Scott1 person needs an answerI do too

Does clicking "OK" help? If not, try manually compacting: 1. Start Outlook Express. 2. Click File > Folders > Compact All Folders .

Thanks for the reply, Steve.Guess I didn't make myself clear enough. Sorry about that. The thing is, OE6 is prompting mewith the "Compacting Messages" popup. And since I am not using OE6, I just want the msg to go away w/o having to click the "Cancel" button every time I turn on the PC. In other words, I do not want the popup box to display at all.Since I don't know why it suddenly appeared on my PC, I don't know what exactly will happen if I do click the "OK" button. For example, could it compact (archive in Outlook 2000 lingo) my Outlook 2000 messages?Which do not want to happen. Also, there is that very irritating feeling that Windows/MS is trying to force something on me that I don't want. Just leave it alone please. I'll compact/archive my email messages when I am good and ready, thank you very much. It's a control thing you see.Possibly there is a registry hack where I could switch this popup off?

You're welcome, Scott. I don't know why the message started appearing, but: Since it says "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages....", it's coming from Outlook Express. Clicking "OK" couldn't hurt and might solve the problem. Running Outlook Express and manually compacting couldn't hurt and might solve the problem. To make sure that it doesn't affect Outlook 2000, back up your Outlook 2000 message store first.

Try deleteing Outlook Express and installing Microsoft Essentials 2011. You could always delete the registry key, and set the value to zero (0), but be sure to back up the regis beforehand. Also, the most obvious, delete your messages. Or save them to a PST. Break the pack rabbit habit--especially in this time of year. Good luck hancho!! :) Hope it works.

It's different the French version. Different wording.

Install Windows Essentials 2011. Upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8. These problems are resolved in later versions of Windows.

Clicking OK helps to remove the error message--yes. BUT it does not make the error go away. Is just a blanket for the problem. Go to the registry and delete things with Outlook Express. Be careful, do not delete too many things or your system may become unstable for a period of time. Good luck. Lemme know if you need more help.

Windows Search is probably the cause. Read on.The problem is with the registry counter that gives you the prompt after 100 closings of OE. It is being increased quicker than it should be and even if you are not using OE.There is a growing number of programs and actions that may be causing this after installing SP3. Do you have any of the following?IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLLWindows {Desktop} SearchMailwasherNero plug-in(s)Opening EML files while OE is closed will also contribute to the registry count.Various anti-virus, anti-spyware and third party firewalls, especially if they were running when you installed SP3.Archived thread discussing this issue in June 2008:http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general/browse_frm/thread/fcd35fbfa457fd6fIn the case of Windows Search, (the #1 offender), you have to tell it to stop indexing OE.Windows Search. Set Desktop Search Options: http://www.microsoft.com/australia/windows/desktopsearch/search/options.mspxIn the Windows Control Panel | Indexing Options | Modify. Clear the check box for Outlook Express. In the case of Nero Scout, see Item 2.3 on page 8 here.ftp://ftp6.nero.com/user_guides/nero8/scout/NeroScout_Enu.pdfIn the option to exclude selected file types from indexing, be sure to add these file types:.eml, .dbx & .nwsBruce HagenMS-MVP Oct. 1, 2004 ~ Sept. 30, 2010Imperial Beach, CA
